Newsboys Sell Over 45,000 Units In First Week

(7/21/2010)

It's official! Born Again, the critically-acclaimed 15th studio project just released from Newsboys, is the biggest project ever to release in the band's history. Even better? Newsboys' Born Again is the 2nd highest Christian artist debut on Billboard's Top 200 and the 3rd highest debut on CCM Soundscan for 2010!

According to Soundscan, Born Again has sold an astounding 45,311 units in just one week, placing Born Again at #4 on Billboard's Overall Chart, charting above new releases from such artists as Sting and M.I.A.  In its first week of release, Born Again also placed Top 4 on iTunes' Overall Chart, sharing company again with Sting and charting before the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack. Born Again officially released July 13th, courtesy of Inpop Records.

Even before sales numbers were released, it has been reported that Born Again is the best project Newsboys has ever released. It has also been said that the band is "wonderfully rejuvinated," "amazing" and "The 'Boys are back...simply the best!" It's been months and months of hard work for Newsboys leading up to the release of Born Again, and it's certainly paying off.

Along the way, the band has received tremendous support from retail, radio stations, media outlets, and dedicated fans across the nation. From kicking off a few of their new songs and doing local tour promotion earlier this year during the WinterJam 2010 tour to now, Newsboys have been so ready to share Born Again with the world.

"The record-setting number of sales today reflect the dedication and hard work of Newsboys to create another groundbreaking musical creation," exclaims Andrew Patton, General Manager, Inpop Records. "The amazing support of Christian radio stations, festival promoters, our hard-working Inpop staff, and our partners at EMI CMG distribution have all earned our thanks today."

RADIO
For an amazing eight  weeks, Born Again's first radio single, "Born Again," claimed the top spot at CHR radio, while the song continues it's climb to the top on the Christian AC charts, currently Top 10. To further promote the CD's release, Newsboys traveled around the country last week via ISDN radio hook ups to talk to radio stations and listeners from coast to coast. The band was featured on numerous morning shows and stations around the country, including K-LOVE; Air 1; Star 99.1 New York; WCSG Grand Rapids, MI; WAY-FM Network; His Radio Greenville, SC; KSBJ Houston; WFFH Fish Nashville; and KFIS Fish Portland. The band set up a special ustream page allowing stations to include LIVE video into each of the interviews.

MEDIA
Preparing for street week the critical press has shown their support as well. Popular outlets such as FOX News, Rhapsody, Billboard, gmclife.com, CCM, Charisma, TitleTrakk.com, CBN, and so many more have promoted Born Again.

Both NewReleaseTuesday.com and JesusFreakHideout.com named Newsboys' Artist of the Week, promoting them on their homepages and featuring full CD streaming, feature articles and reviews. HearitFirst.com immediately jumped on board with numerous exclusive video interviews, as well as streaming the new project and launching a contest to win a trip to Rock the Universe to sit side-stage during the Newsboys performance. Visit the site too to not miss drummer Duncan Phillips' sharing his laundry tips with the world, as well as much more.

What are the critics saying about the new release?

HM Magazine Celebrates 25 Years Of Hard Music News

(7/17/2010)

25th Anniversary Issue Links The Work of Dedicated Musicians Through a List of HM's "Top 100 Christian Rock Albums of All Time"

25 years ago, Doug Van Pelt transformed newsstands by providing news and insights to heavy metal fans through a new magazine, aptly titled Heaven's Metal. Van Pelt, founder and editor, was a junior attending the University of Texas when he created the magazine in 1985. During this time, Christian hard rock bands such as Stryper, DeGarmo and Key and Kings X were influencing both the Christian and the general music industry as whole, which quickly pushed Van Pelt to dedicate his efforts on the magazine full-time.

After Heaven's Metal 10th anniversary, Van Pelt decided to focus on the current trends in music thus calling the magazine, HM. The name change acted as a banner for the broader spectrum of music they began to cover. HM's prior focus on heavy metal shifted to a wide array of genres from hardcore to indie rock to punk. While HM included a large span of genres, hard rock bands such as P.O.D., MxPx, Impending Doom, and Flyleaf continued to grace the cover. As culture shifted, so did HM and with that, they have become the gateway for musicians to express themselves.

Van Pelt's most popular feature in HM, "What So & So Says," is a segment in which bands such as The Used, Thrice and Korn have shared their views on Christianity and related topics. HM also provides readers with spotlights on upcoming artists, album reviews, trending topics, and in depth music news.

For their 25th anniversary, HM created a list to showcase the "Top 100 Christian Rock Albums of All Time," with U2's seminal album The Joshua Tree holding the number 1 position.

The much-awaited list is compiled of albums from the likes of bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, Skillet, P.O.D., Stryper and MUTEMATH. Van Pelt introduced the list as a category of recognition. HM rocked out their latest issue with additional stories on Impending Doom and Haste the Day's latest albums. Throughout Van Pelt's career he has not only worked with HM, but has made a name for himself through many avenues in the industry.  Van Pelt has been profiled in Alternative Press magazine, written a top 10 Christian metal albums list for Revolver and penned long-standing columns for Guitar World and CCM Magazine.

"It has been a dream come true to see HM grow throughout the years," states Van Pelt.  "It's been such a blessing and privilege to have spent the last 25 years working to promote bands and people that I respect.  To do something you love for this long is an honor, and we are looking forward to see what the next 25 years holds for HM, and music as a whole."

HM is sold in all fifty states and is distributed in Barnes & Noble, Hastings, and Family Christian Stores. Subscribers for HM come from all over the world and represent around 20 countries, including Iceland, Papua New Guinea, Czech Republic and Cypress. HM Magazine was recently awarded a Telly Award for its HM/Gwar Internet commercial campaign (developed and filmed by the makers of the Owl City "Fireflies" video – Endeavor Media).

Children 18:3 Brings The Rain With Sophomore Release

(7/8/2010)

The storm is on the horizon and that storm is Children 18:3's sophomore release, Rain's 'A Comin', which released last week to killer reviews from the media and fan anticipation.  This release also landed the sibling band from Minnesota on Billboard Heatseekers chart at No. 23.  In addition to the media coverage, Children 18:3 also premiered their music video for their single "Cover Your Eyes." The music video can be viewed here.  Check out what is being said about Children 18:3 and their new release:

"If you are looking for a fun rocker with plenty of diversity and a little something different then Rain's 'a Comin will be right up your musical alley."
-- About.com

"Along comes Rain's A Comin', an intense, melodic and powerful collection of songs that sees the Hostetters leaping forward creatively. The supercharged anthems call to mind the SoCal punk scene as represented by Green Day and Blink-182, but tempered with the mature attack of Jawbreaker."
-- Alternative Press, 3.5 stars

"Children 18:3 sound completely different than any bands on the label, sticking true to their own rock 'n roll sound."
 --AbsolutePunk.net

"Rain's 'A Comin' is a solid effort from a rock & roll band that stands to be around for a long time....Children 18:3 manages to punch a loud, grinding punch. They're noisy, they're fun, your kids will love them."
--TheChristianManifesto.com

"The punk rockin'est siblings in the land are back at again with their sophomore label release, Rain's 'A Comin' and this time they take their sound and expand it from top to bottom creating one of the top albums of the year."
--ChristianMusicZine.com

"The wait was worth it! This is the punk album that you wish the last ten punk albums you bought were."
-- Hopecore.com
(Also featured the band on the July 2010 Cover)

"Rain's A' Comin' is one of the best rock albums you're going to hear this Summer, if not this year. And Children 18:3 just confirm that their stellar debut was no fluke. They're a force to be reckoned with."
-- JesusFreakHideout.com, 4.5 stars

About Children 18:3:
The trio of siblings on Tooth & Nail Records hails from a rural farming community in Minnesota where the three siblings developed their undeniable glam-rock sound. Children 18:3 is comprised of siblings David (lead vocals, songwriter, guitar), Seth (drums) and Lee Marie (bass, vocals). The combination of male and female vocals along with their unmatched determination is a throw back to the beginnings of Tooth & Nail punk and rock n' roll.  The sophomore release excels in highs and will leave you feeling inspired to make a difference, to make a lasting change in your world.  Known for their over-the-top glam/punk imaging and devastating live show, Children 18:3 have demonstrated here that they have the sand for a run at a larger audience.  Over the past two years, they have toured with such industry heavyweights as Brian Head Welch, Project 86, The Classic Crime, Norma Jean, and Haste The Day.

Runaway City - A Refuge For The Weary

(7/6/2010)

Long before the social networking revolution, there was a sizable chasm between rock stars and their adoring fans.

While Twitter and Facebook have certainly helped bridged the gap, North Carolina rockers Runaway City are hoping to completely knock it down by simply being real with their listeners.

"At the end of the day, we want people to realize that we are real people," drummer Chris Burrow says. "Even though we're up on a stage, we go through struggles just like everyone else. By being authentic, we can truly connect with people. We don't try to put ourselves above anyone else, and when we talk to our fans after a show, we want that to be apparent."

For lead singer Josh Edwards, lead guitarist Jace Bowman, guitarist Tyler Ricketts, and Chris, the relationships they build while playing their encouraging, hope-fueled rock songs is what they inevitably consider the heartbeat of their ministry.

"God wants us to come to Him just as we are, so why should we put on airs when playing our songs?" Tyler says. "We don't have to 'perform' to be in His good graces, and we don't want to pretend like we've always got it together when we struggle as much as the next person."

Friends since college, music has always played an integral role in the lives of Runaway City. After leading worship at their respective youth groups, the band was born out of a deep friendship and desire to encourage people through the universal, barrier-breaking medium of music.

"As a band, we want people to find refuge in our songs, even if it's just for three minutes," Chris shares. "We want to be that safe haven for people, and that's what actually inspired our name. In the Old Testament, if someone committed a major crime like murder or theft, they had to flee to a safe place until they could have a fair trial. And that's what Runaway City is, an oasis from life's complications and troubles."

Influenced by the likes of Switchfoot, Daughtry, Needtobreathe, Safety Suit, U2 and Three Doors Down, Runaway City serves up a timely message with a sense of urgency. Filled with driving guitars, confessional lyrics and impassioned vocal delivery, Runaway City's debut Armored Heart is creative yet completely  accessible with songs like "Fade," the band's first single, that immediately gets to the heart of the matter.

"'Fade' is basically a love song written to someone who is dealing with hardship and who feels like he or she is struggling alone," Tyler explains. "It's a musical snapshot of Christ's love for us and an important reminder that no matter what we're going through, God's redeeming love will never fade."

Also written when a friend was going through a troubling season of life, "Daybreak" is a gentle plea for the wandering soul. "Once again, it's a metaphor for God always being there and gently guiding us back to the place we need to be," Tyler elaborates. "Even when our lives seem dark, He's the beacon of Hope and Light bringing us home."

Providing a relatable snapshot of grace in a culture that's largely performance-driven, "Scars" is also a meaningful dialogue about how the mistakes we make don't define us.

"Yes, there's a point of accountability where we must admit—and ask forgiveness for the sin in our lives," Chris says. "But once we've done that, it's important to know that the pain associated with those mistakes will fade in time. And I think that's a message that everyone, whether you're five or 50, needs to hear."

In the increasingly complicated, often-cynical world we live in, there's a reason why positively charged lyrics are a refuge for a wide, diverse demographic. And that's because everyone loves a compelling, heart-tugging song that deeply resonates on an emotional level—the very music that newcomers Runaway City are committed to making.
